What is a digital nomad?
Digital nomads are people who work using telecommunications technologies (mostly a laptop) for their jobs, and they often can work remotely from different countries. This special characteristic allows them to travel abroad while working and enjoying life in a different way.
Maybe this lifestyle is idealized by many young people because, as well as it may sound, it also has some difficulties. But the great thing about it is that we can feel that, in some way, we are defying capitalism norms. Why? Because we are no longer slaves! We need to work, obviously. But now we can decide what kind of job we do, where to work and sometimes even at what time and how many hours a day we spend doing our jobs. It is all up to us now. Although we have to be very organized to succeed, we are really free.
About my generation
Life is too short to live the same day twice. We are constantly aware of this and we want to enjoy every second to the fullest. We question things much more than previous generations. We are more unprejudiced. We do not care so much about what they will say, and we do not like doing things just because we have to. The idea of working all our lives in the same place, with the same boss, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. bores us and terrifies us.
Clearly, It is not a coincidence that we all feel that everything is ephemeral when at work we are just an extra number, and the day the company no longer need us, they dismiss us without prior notice and without even a “thank you”. Everything orbits around the productivity of companies and gaining time, taking advantage of time, squeezing everything to the fullest. Anyway, we are taking notice of this situation, so we also want to gain time, we want to take advantage of it and squeeze our time to the whole. And I believe the great thing is that in this way we become even more productive than we used to be, which is as useful for a company as for ourselves! Working for objectives and not just fulfilling a schedule is much more motivating and productive, I am completely convinced about that.
Older generations see us as immature, undecided, naive and scattered and they may be right, perhaps we are a bit of all that. However, we do not like the idea of concentrating and devoting our entire lives to only one thing. We need more, always a little more. Postmodern life is affecting the human brain with serious problems such as anxiety and depression, but it also has a wonderful part: thanks to globalization and technology developments today we are able to know much more about other countries and cultures and that is so fascinating that we want to go there, really get in contact with them, learn from them and experience a different lifestyle than our parents.
All things said It’s not just a whim. The reason why digital nomads had appeared is that in the deepest part of our being, we know that it will be an incredible and enriching experience that will change our lives completely and allow us to become better and wiser people.
